UCR STUDENT HEALTH & COUNSELING CENTER
Working closely alongside MIG firm principal, Calvin Abe, I developed the site design for the University of California-Riverside Student Health & Counseling Center. Partnering with the lead architects, HGA, we crafted a design defined by a serious of outdoor multipurpose garden rooms and gathering spaces that blend seamlessly with the greater campus.
The UCR Health & Counseling occupies what was previously a very large parking lot facing the city of Riverside. The landscape plan for the new site provides a much needed friendly face to the city. Our planting concepts and palettes feature native coastal sage scrub plants with year round character.
SITE PLAN
The plan includes a generously landscaped primary building entry, a secluded staff break area, and a student respite courtyard within a Palo Verde grove. Native coastal sage scrub plantings and Jacaranda trees create a calming environment, while bio-retention basins and ADA parking stalls enhance sustainability and accessibility. The design seamlessly integrates wellness and nature, providing serene spaces for relaxation and reflection.
NORTHEAST & EAST ENTRIES
These entries are adorned with playful barrel cacti and native coastal sage plantings that thrive year-round, creating a welcoming and soothing atmosphere for students and staff frequenting the counseling center.
STAFF BREAK AREA & COURTYARD
These serene seating areas framed by Jacaranda and Palo Verde trees provide calming environments for students to relax with a mix of private and public facing areas. The courtyard design balances opportunities for social interaction with private, reflective spaces, promoting overall wellness and a connection to nature throughout the year.
